SUSTAINABILITY

Sky Studios Elstree has some of the most ambitious studio sustainability goals in the world.

Designed from the ground up using sustainable materials and technologies, our site continues to set a benchmark for studios around the globe.

As a founding member of BAFTA Albert’s Studio Sustainability Standard, we help shape best practice across the industry and support productions in reducing their on-site carbon footprint. We're also one of the top-scoring studios on the Albert scorecard, with an average score of over 95%, and we're always looking for new ways to further improve green operations across the site.

_______________

ENERGY

  • 140,000 sq ft of rooftop solar panels and a renewable energy tariff power electricity on site, reducing our carbon emissions by up to 500 tonnes per year. That’s equivalent to 22,371 trees being planted annually, or enough energy to power over 200 homes each year.
  • We use 100% LED lighting across site (house, office, external, etc.) with motion and time sensor control systems to ensure maximum efficiency in and out of hours.
  • We have sufficient external power across the studio, removing the need for productions to bring generators on site.

WASTE

  • Sky Studios Elstree partners with an innovative waste contractor to manage waste on site, ensuring that zero waste goes to landfill and helping productions improve their recycling rates.
  • We support productions with in-depth monthly waste reports and encourage either the reuse or donation of materials and props to local charities and schools.
  • All food in our Studio Cafe is from local suppliers, and we support regional food donation programs and charities.
  • Our office furniture is end-of-line, high-quality ex-demo furniture, reducing manufacturing emissions.

TRANSPORT

  • Sky Studios Elstree operates a fleet of electric golf buggies, vans, forklifts and facilities vehicles plus electric shuttle buses for site visitors.
  • We have 80 EV Charging points in our car park and we operate a no diesel policy for machinery on site.
  • Our partnership with Beryl Bikes allows for electric bike travel to and from Elstree & Borehamwood Station.
  • We provide HVO biofuel on site for refuelling, reducing greenhouse emissions from operations by up to 90%.

ENVIRONMENT

  • All buildings have an EPC rating of A and BREEAM ratings of Excellent - Outstanding.
  • Our rainwater harvesting system irrigates flower beds on site.
  • We have recently installed 4 new bee hives, which will grow to support 80,000 bees by 2027.
  • Our dedicated on-site landscaping team maintain green spaces and bat and bird boxes in order to support local habitat corridors.

PARTNERSHow we implement sustainable operations on site

RECYCLING

We work with Cawleys to manage all on-site recycling, ensuring zero waste goes to landfill and providing detailed monthly waste reports for the studio and our production partners.

FOOD

Our Studio Cafe sources the majority of food from Hertfordshire-based companies, supporting local supply chains, reducing food mileage, and championing more sustainable food choices on site.

CHARITIES

We encourage productions on-site to donate surplus food and supplies to local charities, helping to reduce waste and give items a longer life.

FURNITURE

We source high-quality, ex-demo office furniture from local partners, helping us reduce manufacturing emissions and extend product life cycles across the site.

BERYL BIKES

Beryl Bikes provides a low-carbon travel option between Elstree & Borehamwood Station and the studio, supporting greener commuting for staff and visitors.

HVO FUEL

New Era Energy supplies sustainable HVO biofuel on site, helping reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% and supporting our no-diesel policy.

EV CHARGING

With 80 EV charging points in our multi-story car park, ChargePoint provides discounted rates for staff, crew and visitors, helping to make low-emission travel more accessible across site.

ALBERT

Our staff regularly complete Albert Sustainability training and, as a founding member, we help shape sustainable studio operations and support productions in lowering their carbon footprint on-site.
